Eastern State Penitentiary, Phila, Pa. 9/11/04
Eastern State is a very interesting place due in part to society's changing attitude about incarceration. When it opened, policy toward prisioners called for complete silence 24 hours a day for the duration of the sentence. Along with this, no other prisioner interaction was allowed. Each cell has its own small exercise area and there was no work program. Therefore, conceivably the only other human contact one would have was with the guard who administered to him. -Continued
